Jonathan,

I have installed NX client/node/server on a Centos 5.5.
After pulling my hair for a few days and making config changes and key copies. I did the yum groupinstall.

The NXclient comes up fine on my Windows Vista box.

But when I try to run the NXclient
on Centos, through the Windows NXclient, I get:

[root@CentOS-5 ~]# nxclient
Xlib: connection to ":1018.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

nxclient: cannot connect to X server :1018.0
[root@CentOS-5 ~]#

Ideas?

I found that to get rid of the authentication fail...

I found that to get rid of the authentication failed requires turning the password login on in the ssh configuration.

/etc/ssh/sshd_config

PasswordAuthentication yes

just make sure you set a root password because the ssh is also setup PasswordAuthentication yes

In terms of timing, I find that while the client says "waiting for authentication, the "sshd: Connecton closed by 127.0.0.1" gets printed in the log file. A little later, the client announces auth failure message and the "Details" button is disabled which means I can find what it experienced.

I dont know the log location in winxp NX client, if there is any.

Nikunj--thank you for sharing your experience. I would check the logs on NX on your Windows XP machine as well as the SSH logs (probably /var/log/secure.log). One or the other should give more details about the connection failure.

If you have troubles interpreting, please post again here their contents.

Hi Jonathan,

I wanted to install NX on a fedora 8 machine instantiated from a public AMI by amazon.

I installed NX using the "yum install freenx" command. I installed NX client on windows XP and followed the instructions to connect to NX server(configuring client to use key copied from /etc/nxserver/client.id_dsa.key)

When I attempt to connect using an unix username/passwd I added on the ec2, I get "authorization failed for user 'username'.

I can connect to ec2 machine using this ssh command:

ssh -i 'client.id_dsa.key' nx@ec2hostname

Also, the username/passwd given on the client also are correct.

Which authentication is fail then? I did the same installation on my local fc8 machine and it works absolutely fine. I suspect this problem is happening only on ec2.

Any pointers will be of much help to me.
